Slovaltine Clues: Part 6 113

Here is Slovaltine Clue, number Six. There is a LOST-related answer hidden in the image. Feel free to discuss it in the comments, but if you think you have the answer send an email to slovaltine@lostargs.com.

BTW, you should not use anagrams to solve this one.

Hint #1
You should not use anagrams to solve this one.

Hint #2
I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so.

Hint #3
This isn't Tic-Tac-Toe, what else has a pattern like that?

Hint #4
Looks like a Sudoku. If it helps, you might try changing the letters into numbers before you solve it.

Solution
Solving the Sudoku, the middle column, which is all blank in the original, will reveal the answer - JAMES FORD (aka Sawyer)

OJ Morse... running back for the Tomato Tennessee Titans... ok.. I'm still punchy over the last one. I think my problem is I get going in 4 directions at once... taking shortcuts.. and not seeing each one to a conclusion.. then I start intermingling the 4 and get a "soup sandwich".. ...need soda.

lost2010 said...

So, does it look like those chessboard ciphers because I wasted all that time today looking those up - - or because it is one. ..

Black Swan said...

I'm looking at straddling checkerboard right now.... lol

Meatball said...

lol @ myself because i just thought it was a great idea to organize these in excel...

seriously. im going to be so fried before dwy even starts...lol.

Meatball said...

WAIT!
just saw a HUGE pattern

Black Swan said...

I'm already fried (this cold doesn't help). All this is fun and good ARG skills practice, but the more I think of it, the more I'm convinced I don't want to be a non-paid member of the freakin' DI.... lol I'm going to try to flunk their stupid tests...

Meatball said...

ugh. i wish i could work through this with someone. i just noticed something big, but i dont really know what to do with it...

Dennis said...

you're welcome :)

BTW, this is first prize.

Anonymous said...

imo, the easy way for solving this is kinda "cheating"..

maybe becuz i solve it using the longer way..

well, for once, dont be civilized.. just get yourself in the wild..

haha

Anonymous said...

I could just be completely dumb but it seems like a sadoku puzzle with letters to me.

Zort70 said...

Hi all, I've been checking in occasionally with the clues.

I've gone to DWY today and no change, looks like they should have specified the time as well !

Meatball said...

i noticed that pattern and then felt dumb because i thought i was a red herring.

also, when did these lines appear in the picture?

k3lvini5aliv3 said...

Solving via anagram was quick.. as far as sadoku solving, that's beyond me. I do see that the letters are grouped into three groups of 5,2,5. Total of 36 letters but they range from 2 (D) up to 6 (O). It was getting interesting plotting them in a spreadsheet as you get nice versions in left/right/diagonal but with only 2 D's.. it runs out of steam.

Meatball said...

sent in my updated answer...seeking approval from a stranger as obsessed with a fictional television show as i am as we speak.

Anonymous said...

DWY change you can now download an ID card from your profile.

Meatball said...

also re: dwy, i never noticed that you could "download" your id card if you go to your profile. is this a newer feature?

i went ahead and did it and it brings up an adobe file with a little card i can print and with which i can feel cool...huzzah.

Zort70 said...

I've printed my card, but I added the picture I uploaded to DWY to the back.

For no particular reason other than I can !

Zort70 said...

Meatball, yes I'm fairly sure this is brand new, not part of the original form.

bob said...

theres empty line in the middle

Anonymous said...

bob said...
theres empty line in the middle

In the middle of what?

bob said...

in the middle of the pisture. theres one line vithout any letters. from up to down. in the middle

Meatball said...

@bob that line is important.

bob said...

hey, i was little playing with it (but i think that i discovered nothing) but in every block i found one word. it is : SEA, DR(doctor?), SAD, ARE, OJ(?), FOE, ROM(maybe ethan), JF(?), ERA.

it is for nothing, i think but maybe not...

bob said...

ok. in the first half, with mixing letters is : SAM(find815?), ROSE (!), MORE or ROM (ethan). i didnt use letters R O E A O J S

bob said...

im writing just bullsh*ts. its for nothing.

BTW, second part says DAD, JOSE and FAR. S F J J F F E O.

its bullsh*t

bob said...

theres no ctrl and alt on the keybord. its funny

EmeraldIsLost said...

ok this could be lots of things; not sure how to begin!! except for the fact that the clue says no anagrams.

EmeraldIsLost said...

oooh i like the suduko idea; because there are only 9 letters; a d e f j m o r s within the whole thing; and it is exactly like a sudoko grid. maybe complete the sudoko and the empty squares at the moment will hold the clue?? or something??

EmeraldIsLost said...

PS Nick and Dennis you guys are really good at making up clues!!

lost2010 said...

Dennis -

The right answer the wrong way. . .

You realize that's the second time that's happened to me, right?

You've got to quit leaving those subliminal clues. LOL

Anonymous said...

yay, this is the first one I solved.
heather and bob are on the right track.

EmeraldIsLost said...

yeah, i've solved it too. pretty easy, this one, actually.

lost2010 said...

Okay - now I think I've solved it the right way.

bob said...

wait, wait....im on the right track??, i was making anagrams and i shouldnt make anagrams. how can i be on the right track????? or am i?

EmeraldIsLost said...

@bob: something you said is important, and something heather said is important; but forget the anagrams.

EmeraldIsLost said...

gah when is the testing going to start, i wonder? or maybe it already has and they are testing our powers of perception on whether we noticed the arrival of the id card, or not, lol. i doubt it somehow.

@lost 2010: lol, i see how you might arrive at the answer without doing the puzzle properly, but what other one did you manage to do like that?? quite a skill.

bob said...

the empty line is important, isnt it?

bob said...

and sudoku is right, isnt it?

EmeraldIsLost said...

maybe.

bob said...

can anyone solve sudoku with letters? i was trying, but it had no sence....im loosing

bob said...

can be all letters there? i mean from A to Z??

Anonymous said...

bob said...

can be all letters there? i mean from A to Z??

no, just the letters in the picture.
try numbering each letter and solving like a normal sudoku

bob said...

did anyone noticed, that always on second line in every single horizontally part(mean three horizontally blocks) in the middle is empty line too??

M _ A R _ _ D _ _
_ E _ _ _ _ S _ J
O _ S _ _ D F A _

bob said...

it is not working! M and D has the same number (4) and it is not possible in normal sudoku

Thrasher76 said...

Looks like you guys have found a better way to play than TPTB. It also is more interesting!

I hope something begins to happen with this game or I fear I will drop out.

Later

Anonymous said...

Thanks for giving us a clue that I could actually do with no help! Unlike the other ones lol!

bob said...

im coming closer....almost have it!

Anonymous said...

Bob try to keep it simple dont think too hard and yes you can do soduku with letters

Black Swan said...

Hi. I sent in an answer, but I did anagram (so maybe it's wrong). I had to learn sudoku first here

EmeraldIsLost said...

ok cool i'm going to delete my last comment now in case it gives too much away to others.

bob said...

ok, thank you guys, sudoku is not the thing, that i can solve the best. is nice to know, that i found right way, thanks you. thanx guyz ;)

Black Swan said...

I wonder if having my Dharma official ID card will get me some discounts at my favorite stores (or better yet, gas stations). I want to know what the privileges are before I try to do well on the tests... lol

New Post

Thanks Meatball and Zort for the ID card heads up. I have disabled comments for the new post. When/if something more substantial happens on our "Commencement Date", I'll enable comments and we can move discussion to the new post. Until then enjoy your Slovaltine.

Black Swan said...

slovaltine.... yum!

Anonymous said...

So is it Sudoku or not? Im sat here trying to solve a damn word sudoku - may not have too!!

Looking forward to the ARG launch!

Black Swan said...

I don't know much about Adobe Reader. Where my ID card is ready to print, I went to signature preview mode and it says level B compliant and when I click "view report" it says the document contains rich content that is suppressed in preview mode. "Report code 1000, document contains hidden behavior."
and:
"The document contains hidden actions that may not be intended or known by the end user. Actions include JavaScript actions (document open, save, etc.), playing multimedia, executing a menu item, etc."

Is any of this significant?

Anonymous said...

Hahaha!!

Done!

Nice work guys!

Anonymous said...

@Codysmom same here with mine. I dont know much about comps though so dont know if this is relevent to anything or not! Gonna ask my Dad lol he should know!

Black Swan said...

hesbells, let me know

Anonymous said...

whoops spelt my name wrong in the last post!

Tess315 said...

Good Morning All
Looks like I went to bed to early last night. Codysmom had the answer good for you. Yesterday was the first day of school and I had been sleeping in all summer and had to ge up early yesterday. I was dead by 10:00. When I have been staying up to 1:00 a.m. I even forgot to pack my husband's lunch and had to take it to him after I took my daughter to school lol. Back to the real world.
I haven't looked at the last 2 clues or the solution yet.
And I have no idea how to do sudoku. Maybe I'll check out codysmom's link.
Also the first thing I did today was go to DWY and nothings changed for me. No id card to download boo hoo.

Tess315 said...

Ahhh!
Just checked the solution to the chessboard solution.
I had the right combinations of numbers/letters but in the wrong order.
That's why I wasn't getting an answer with the hex converter.
Oh and I did see codysmom's answer last night, but like I said I was dead tired. lol
Well at least I was on the right track. That makes me feel good. :)

Anonymous said...

I solved this like sudoku and it definitely works, which seems too odd to be a coincidence, but I don't see any phrases or words popping out at me.

EmeraldIsLost said...

@sayid's girl: have you looked at 'my profile' for the id card; it should be below the id number box and above the space for uploading an image.

PS caroline: look closer!!

Tess315 said...

emeraldislost
Yep I looked there.
Just the card number then email reminder SMS reminder then upload image. Which I didn't do. Maybe that's why.
I'll refresh again and see what happens.
Thanks.

Tess315 said...

Refreshed it's there now. Yay!

Steff said...

@Dennis or Nick,

when are you going to post the next clue? in fact, a better question: are there going to be any more good clues?
(these 6 were AWESOME; Find815 was IMO not a good ARG; so although this "Project / OGR" will probably be similar to Find815, i hope there will be more clues like this, like in TLE - the only good clue in Find815 was the STEGOSAURUS pic)

Nickb123 said...

Steff - no#7 could be the last, as it'll be difficult posting clues at the same time as the proper ARG. However, if they do "one test per week" clues, maybe we could do some extra puzzles in the gap time... though to be honest I'm all out of ideas right now lol! I've already devised 4 clues.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Ah ha! Finally one that I can solve. All of those Sudoku puzzles finally came in handy. :)

Anonymous said...

@Codysmom
I've spoken to my dad and he seems to think that this is pretty normal for a PDF and that there is nothing for us to do with it. Ho Hum .... If anyone thinks any different let us know.

Tess315 said...

codysmom and helsbells
I'm confused (nothing to unusal)Do you get this when the id card opens in adobe?
When I clicked the download button at DWY the window opened save as like when you save a picture from a website. It went into My Pictures. I double clicked it from there and it opened in adobe. Then I clicked the printer icon and it printed.
Are you guys getting something different?

k3lvini5aliv3 said...

Took the crash course in sudoku and solved my very first one. Created my own little checklist for it as well, so I'll be ready for the next sudoku when it comes into my life :)

Anonymous said...

Sayidsgirl
If you click on document on the tool bar (in adobe)and click 'sign' - 'preview document' it should get you to the view report bit. I have looked at other pdfs I have and they all pretty much say similar things so it probably isn't that important. Thats how I got to it anyway not sure if codysmom did the same.

Anonymous said...

I have a stupid comp related question...does the fact that the dharmawants you website music keeps playing even when the internet conexion is completely cut off mean anything??The buttons keep floating around...everything is normal

Anonymous said...

Never mind--I figured it out!

Tess315 said...

helsbells
Hummm
Don't even see that on mine. But that's ok not a big deal. Thanks for explaining.

Dennis said...

Anonymous... that's normal. Once you have the DWY site loaded in your browser, it stays in your cache and will keep playing until you click something.

Anonymous said...

ok thanx

Anonymous said...

Just installed a bar code reading software
ANM

Anonymous said...

ok, just completed the sudoku, changed numbers back to letters...now what?!It isnt an anagram, but I dont see any words forming obviously...

Steff said...

try reading every row and column

Hoku said...

Thank you Dennis for giving us a reprieve on this one...I was able to solve it last night while I was at work pretty quickly! My poor head still aches from yesterday LMAO! On to #7...

Tess315 said...

Ok now that I know how to do sudoku. Maybe I'll sit down and try and figure this out.

Tess315 said...

Ok I just refreshed after I read hoku's post and there wasn't any # 7 and now there is.
My computer has become sovaltine.
First the id card now this. lol

Dennis said...

You always catch me in my web of lies :)

I actually back-dated that post so it would show up behind the ID card post.

Tess315 said...

ah ha! lol

Scoutpost said...

The thing is, you could use anagram to solve this one. When you have sudoku (or at least the one's I've done) it's #1-9. Once you get all the letters in the puzzle, it's just a matter of arranging them in the right rows and columns, but it's the same letters. So if you copy the 9 letters down, you can use anagram to figure it out.

Scoutpost said...

...even though Dennis told us not to. :)

Dennis said...

Yeah, I know. I though of that when I made the puzzle, so I ran it though the anagram program, and the answer didn't come up, so I figured I was safe.

The original image didn't have the lines in it, so it was less obvious what to do, so the first six answers were all solved by anagram.

Dennis said...

BTW, I put up hints and the solution on the front page...

Tess315 said...

I got five sections of the sudoku and then gave up. But that's more sudoku than I've ever done. Since I've never done it before. So I feel good about that. :)
