Test 1: Volunteer Assessment in Progress 497

Hans Van Eeghen was up early today sending out e-mails. He prompts us to go to Dharma Wants you, print out out Dharma ID Card, and commence the first assessment. The source code of the e-mail has a strange phrase in it, "Batteries Ice Pint" which The ODI at Dark UFO worked out could possible anagram to "Patience is Bitter".

ATTENTION ALL RECRUITS
RE: OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF TESTING
Namaste.
Today is the most wonderful of days.
It marks the launch of the Dharma Initiative's Volunteer Recruitment Program.
Having completed the eligibility test you can now download your official Dharma Initiative ID card. Simply go to My Profile and download your card. Carry it with pride.
Today you will also be able to commence our extensive testing program that will assess your suitability for a range of research roles within the Dharma Initiative.
Many years ago I was asked to help rebuild this noble community of scientific inquiry. With its genuinely altruistic vision, I understood that a vibrant volunteer cohort would be a fundamental part of this effort.
Together, with my dedicated recruiting team, I have searched the globe for the best and brightest to join us, to form the foundations of the newly reconstituted Dharma Initiative.
Today we lay that foundation. So that together we can guide the world to a better tomorrow.
Hans Van Eeghen
Head of Recruiting
The Dharma Initiative

The test is similar to a tangram puzzle, where you need to arrange the shapes to make a complete square (*Hint: You won't use all the shapes). Some of you have taken the test, and some will be trying now. Good luck, and remember, always carry your Dharma ID Card "with pride"!

*Thanks to ib4uc for e-mailing about this.

Hey, has it occurred to you guys that Hoodlum wants us to hate DI and that they are dicking us around on purpose?

If that's the case....

WAY TO GO CODYSMOM! I love the commercial, love the invites, love all the BSing!! Just let me know what I need to do as a recruit, I'm ready!

Black Swan said...

Well, what I was thinking was to make a Black Swan myspace, then go out and friend people and then wait for those with info to come to us. On the myspace I could also do a blog for those who would like to get their frustration out. We could have weekly or bi-weekly puzzles. I was waiting to hear from dennis since he said he had ideas.

Capcom said...

LOL! You guys are so much fun. Think I'll call it a night too. Can't wait for more BSing fun tomorrow! X-D

We don't need no stinkin' (slow) ARG!

night, capcom!

CattyGirl said...

The site is horrible! I can't log in and I've only had the test load twice when I wasn't logged in of course.

I'm so frustrated! Especially reading the multiple times others have played...

Black Swan said...

DDWY site keeps freezing up on me now. Do you think they have heard of my antics?

Black Swan said...

Hi, cattygirl! Sounds like you'd be a great candidate for the Black Swans (see previous comments)

Scoutpost said...

Hey has Dennis been back on lately? He said he had some things up his sleeve, so maybe he's working on a website for the BS's. I like the idea of the myspace page, although I have a block on my computer (due to babysitter issues) that I'll have to figure out how to take off.

Black Swan said...

haven't seen dennis. The reason I said a myspace is because I know how to do it:) I'm waiting to hear dennis' ideas.

Cody'sMom - I nearly peed my pants when I read the "Ben Invite". That is the best!!

Black Swan said...

Black Swan said...

Has anyone tried (or heard of one who tried) to just put a bunch of fake names and fake e-mail addresses in the "challenge a friend" part of test 1 at DDWY? Everyone is so busy trying to get a good score on the puzzles, but that's not even the way to get on the leaderboard, is it?

Tess315 said...

You know if that's the case I'll never make it to the leader board. Because I don't have any friends who like Lost. Just my sister and you guys. And my sister isn't into to blogging and ARG's.

Black Swan said...

It says:

"The leader board shows the top 10 recruits with the most Dharma points. To earn Dharma points, recruit a friend into the volunteer recruitment program and take part in any extra tasks set by Head of Recruiting, Hans Van Eeghan. The leader board is updated every 24 hours."

If the two ways to get Dharma pts. for the Leader Board are:

1. recruiting friends

AND (notice not "or")

2. take part in extra tasks Hans asks us to do

then I don't see where a good score on test 1 will get you onto the leaderboard. I can only assume that people are trying to get high scores so that they won't be stuck with a terrible job like toilet cleaner. OR they are trying to find the "bugs" in the system that allow them to get artificially high scores which will tell DDWY that they are the computer hacks and deserve an unpaid job as such at DDWY.

I don't have any friends that I know of that would appreciate an e-mail from Hans and I don't have the skills of a computer hacker, so I doubt I will ever have any chance at being on the leaderboard.

Scoutpost said...

Well it's an exciting night here....crickets chirping....

Guess we've all had enough of puzzle #1. Now all we have to do is wait for puzzle #2 (which, at this rate, probably won't appear until Sept. 20th).

Yawn.

Scoutpost said...

@codysmom- I know, if you only get points or kudos because you recruit people, then how lame is this gonna be? I have LOST friends, but no one who would actually play this ARG.

How was the A.R.G.? I read over at darkUFO that everyone was focused on some test?? but the real game was focused around some message hidden in our profiles? Ok.. hope it was fun.. I'm going to go see what all of the hoopla was about the winners not wanting to split the prize... precious! Gotta love greed.

Scoutpost said...

Ok something weird just happened when I did the puzzle on DWY. I had been scoring around 74- woo hoo! So I thought I'd try again before I went to bed, so I'm furiously trying to do this puzzle (and not very well) and when I finish I got a 90 something. 93 I think. Something glitchy must have happened because I had not been able to get out of the 70's.

Black Swan said...

I don't know about any message hidden in our profiles, but I do think the "cheat" that someone mentioned over at darkufo is an intentional glitch and that's what we're supposed to find. If you want to read the comments that Andrew said he found it in:

http://lost-forum.com/showthread.php?t=72936&page=5

scroll down and read what jmac2k says

Black Swan said...

scoutpost, did you accidentally hit the spacebar?

Scoutpost said...

Ok well I give up. I can't break my previous score of 74 except for the glitchy time.

Scoutpost said...

I don't know, I don't remember doing that.

Scoutpost said...

I guess I could have. Does that mess things up?

Scoutpost said...

Sorry just now saw your previous post, going to read the comment.

Black Swan said...

Well, if you hit the spacebar right after you've started moving your first piece, things go hay-wire and the clock stops. I think it's an on-purpose glitch and my high score is now 99. I don't call it cheating. I call it smart and something our man from the inside may have done.

Scoutpost said...

Ah, I see. That glitchy thing did happen to me, but I didn't realize the spacebar got hit. I just thought it was another problem with the site. I did almost knock over my diet coke, maybe it hit the spacebar? eh well. I wasn't trying to cheat. I can't even break 74. LOL If that is a built in glitch, then what are we supposed to get from it? I should've paid more attention.

Scoutpost said...

Well it doesn't seem that the score is going to matter anyway, and I'm not going to win by recruiting people.

Scoutpost said...

But at least maybe I won't have to clean the DI toilets!

Black Swan said...

Right! lol

I've been trying to hit the spacebar all over the place and my only result is a stuck-at-loading screen:)

Black Swan said...

I wondered why they called it a "Pressurized Spacial Judgment Evaluation" but I guess it's because you have to put pressure on the spacebar.. lol

MeWantsDharma said...

Geez, I feel like an idiot not recognizing this, but the bug (the bug was easier to find lol). Pressurized Spatial = Press Space

The fact that this is a builtin "cheat", and that you can try as many times as you can, the goal for this puzzle must be that you get an incredible result.

MeWantsDharma said...

codysmom, I think you've solved the real puzzle :)

evotz2 said...

just spent some time catching up on all the posts --- you all are so much more fun than this ARG. the Black Swans? truly inspired. a good laugh is the best way to start the day. thanks.

Ooh that press space thing is so clever; didn't even think to look for something like that, i feel really stupid now haha. Going to have to keep my wits about me from now on.

Oh, and, no change this morning on the site :(

EmeraldIsLost said...

can't believe i spent so much time trying to beat the clock, when, in fact, it was staring us in the face that we don't have to! That space-cheat is soo built in, so i don't feel that its a cheat; the title tells us to do it!!

EmeraldIsLost said...

you have to move a piece first ANM; tried that??

Anonymous said...

ANM
There's abit of a knack to it just takes abit of practice. You have to press it really quickly. But the highest I can get is 99% Finding it really hard to get the 100%.

EmeraldIsLost said...

anyone think that there is any credibility in the 'solvieg hanso' emails over at darkufo?? the only reason is that they seem to indicate this space bar cheat- 'stop time' and all that. Seems unlikely that its part of the ARG to me, but who knows?

Anonymous said...

Just scored 100% hahahaha
However I consider this a failure, the pint was seeing that there was a trick and I didnt..my best glitch-less score was 88% which is not too bad. Well I guess that explains the lack of a leader board.
On the other hand, cant express how happy I am there is more to this test than meets the eye(unless your eye can read!!!!). It is promising indeed
Still a proud member of BS though!

Zort70 said...

I managed to find the bug accidentally so my score is now 99%.

Having read all the comments and some on other sites I am coming to the conclusion that this is a definite feature not a bug.

It is obviously programmed into the system, so it is either a backdoor testing method that Hoodlum left in by mistake or it is deliberate.

Given the seeming general incompetence of the people running the testing it could be just an idiotic mistake, but I'm still preparted to have an open mind to it being deliberate.

Zort70 said...

Oh yes, Go Black Swans Go.

Are we going to have a testing process to join ?

EmeraldIsLost said...

i think it must be deliberate due to what mewantsdharma said; pressurized spatial= press space.

Nickb123 said...

So was this "cheat" intention do you think?

I've tried it, but I don't think you can get above 99% with it, right?

Anonymous said...

99% is the highest I can get and I've tried dozens of times.

Zort70 said...

nick, I think the feature is deliberate, but whether it is meant to be released to all is another question.

Now if it is "in game" could it be a clue or hint that someone is still trying to disrupt from inside the DI ?

If they are trying to disrupt, apart from annoying the DI, what purpose would the feature serve ?

Zort70 said...

The problem seems to be that we don't yet know where the boundary is between Hoodlum's incompetence and what the game is trying to achieve.

EmeraldIsLost said...

ditto 99%!!

Nickb123 said...

I think it must be in-game, and if it is people thus have a right to know. I've taken the decision to blog about it at Lostpedia. If it is just a screw up, I apologize for spoiling, but I detail my reasoning fully in the blog.

Ange said...

zort70 said...The problem seems to be that we don't yet know where the boundary is between Hoodlum's incompetence and what the game is trying to achieve.

I totally agree with you. I am also in the camp that the cheat is deliberate, but I don't think the "scoop giver" at Dark UFO is.

I personally try to be to be careful with "insiders" and what info. they give us. I think that perhaps if the cheat is put there for us to stop time, then there is a hint in one of the phrases of the Hans mail rather than some random with a picture of a microwave who writes into a spoiler site no? We've already had one head smack moment with the whole Comic-con guy.

I do find the title of the test itself suspect but then again it really is just what it says it is. Thoughts?

Anyway, I got a 99%. The time says 100% every time I finish, but when it shows my score it's a 99%.

PS: I just sent you an e-mail Zort.

Nickb123 said...

Its a PRESSurized SPATIAL test - I mean come one! I am 100%, or 99% as it seems, behind publicly saying its deliberate, and I've taken the step to publish my opinion. I hope Dennis does the same actually

lost2010 said...

So you can get 99? I keep getting 98.

I think the title of the test itself is probably supposed to be the hint if there is one.

lost2010 said...

Okay, finally got it to be 99. Finally figured out what controls your score when using the 'outside the box' feature. It's how fast you can get the first piece inside the box.

Zort70 said...

Yes I know I haven't used the B !

Anonymous said...

nah; its just whatever the score was on when you stopped time.

Thrasher76 said...

Yeah! I got the glitch to work too, but not as fast, I got a 95.

Hope there is more to do soon.

lost2010 said...

Can you stop time at 100? Am I just not quick enough?

Zort70 said...

I can stop time at 100, but then I am Hiro from Heroes :-)

EmeraldIsLost said...

look at what lostaddict says in the comments at darkufo;

'I think this is intentional. Here is some code i found in the game(swf):

if (param1.keyCode == Keyboard.SPACE)
{
setMouseState(oldMouseState);
oldMouseState = null;
endPress();
dispatchEvent(new MouseEvent(MouseEvent.CLICK));
}// end if '

found here.

Zort70 said...

emaraldislost - that proves it is a feature not a bug. But it doesn't prove if it is a mistake or "in game"

Zort70 said...

Sorry EmeraldIsLost, I spelt your name wrong.

lost2010 said...

Is it just me or did these puzzles actually get harder after I learned to bend time. . ..

EmeraldIsLost said...

haha, thats ok. i can see your point; doesn't prove its in game. i for one am certain it is though; the title is just too much of a coincidence; and using Space to stop Time? its clever.

Zort70 said...

Space to stop time !

of course time is space - It's a Valis test !!!!!!

Tess315 said...

Ok I got the timer to stop at 100.
So after I solve the puzzle it will give me a score?

Zort70 said...

Sayid'sgirl - Yes, it will give you the score of the time it took to move the piece into the box and press space.

Ange said...

Okay, I made a draft post for the space bar thing. Frankly, at almost 500 comments we need a new post, but I'm going to leave it for Dennis to push the publish button :D.

Tess315 said...

Thanks zort
I'm with lost2010 this puzzle I've stop time on is hard. But probably any of them would be for me. I'm crappy at these things. I was only able to finish one of these things twice and I'm not even going to say how bad my score was. But now that I have time frozen I can wait for my son to come home and have him finish it for me. :)
