Smoke Monster - Judged 185

A round up of everyones favourite P****d Off Giraffe (Hurley's theory). This was a very popular poster and sold out quickly, not the quickest sell out by any means, but it was liked by a lot of people immediately, probably because "ITS THE SMOKE MONSTER" and because of the bold use of colour.

I think the inspiration for this poster came from Locke in this original depiction of the monster.

I can see all of the elements used in the poster :-)

Picture from LostPedia

So on to some images of the poster, first a picture from Reanimator who has print number 108.

Next some closeups courtesy of ReverendMilo on DCAAPB.COM

I'll add my signature to this post when my print arrives, but in the mean time here is ReverendMilo's.

If you are asking why the gnome then I say why not, 1Miletogo took this picture

Finally some other pictures from around the web,

This is from the KR3W Denim Co., the people that produced the shirt, and on this page there is the single comment

"Quiero Una"

Which I think means "I Want One".

I believe that this is a Spanish Lost blog, but I'm not 100% sure !

Roswell in the comments has confirmed that it is a Spanish blog.

Click here to visit the PerdidosporLostClub blog

"Perdido por" means "crazy about" (in a positive way).

So to say you are "perdido por Lost" (or "perdidoS" it´s just the plural form) means you are "crazy about Lost".

The word "Perdido" or "Perdidos" alone means "lost" but "perdido por" means "crazy about".

So it´s really like a play on words: they use LOST instead of Perdidos to make it clear it´s LOST (the tv show)they are talking about, but in Spain "LOST" (the name of the show) is translated as "Perdidos" so if the owner of that blog would have wanted to write the title fully in Spanish it would have been "Perdidos por Perdidos" (the play on words would be clearer that way).

But summary: "Perdidos por Lost" means "Crazy about Lost" :)

as a note, you will probably find that Ken Taylor's signature is actually stamped as he lives in Australia. the two sigs pictured are almost exact apart from the smudging on the second.

Just wanted to confirm "PerdidosporLOSTClub" is indeed a Spanish Lost blog :)

And yes, "quiero una" means "I want one".

I´m from Spain myself ;)

Hi Roswell, thanks for the confirmation.

Can you tell me what the translation of Perdidospor is, as far as I could work out is just means Lost, which makes the title of the blog LostLostClub.

Anon, thanks for that, I didn't know that he hadn't signed them all personally. I'll have a look when my copy arrives.

In this episode Eko also makes a walking stick that is shown in the poster, but when he goes up against smokey, he doesn't have the stick.

P.S. I don't ever want to see, hear or talk about Rousseau's Transmission ever again! Haha.

I wish I had not committed to waiting until the end to decide proper framing for the prints, but I am a man who stands to his personal commitments. It looks great though.

I am gonna repost my post from DarkUFO here, because how much interest in this is a factor for me.

Repost:
Real quick, I have been in talks with my brother. He is married to a diamond broker that can help me with an artisan to produce a limited run of Drive Shaft rings, possibly in silver and custom ring sizes.

I can talk to the sculptor monday, is there interest by others for me to pursue? Or should I just have one made for me (I bet I can work the broker to get a fair price on metal, but I will be doing mine in silver - I like tarnish)

..enh..I like this print for the way it successfully evokes. The use of line, shape, color composition raises the hairs on the back of my neck.

Smokie itself seems more of a Chinese Dragon persuasion in this rendition. Its fire breathing seems in the gold highlites . Its crouched stance suggests a ready to pounce.

But all the surrounding jungle, that is where the terror and fright is. The trees are almost Disney like in their fright. The britest reds indicate the degree of fear.

Eko in half turn, his hand reaching back towards us , is imaginative creation of space. The moon or sun on the other end of this evocative transverse completes the journey thru trepidation.

So, there is a subtle implied bluff here; the bluff of Smokie. We did see Eko call its bluff. We did see and hear Eko recite the 23rd psalm before he got body slammed by Smokie too. So the question of what is Smokie , the answer remains ambiguous. Yet for me..what I identify Smokie as,,is reinforced by all the elements of this print.

Everytime i look at this print, I hear the howls and noise of Smokie. I hope i can still say that years from now......MEL

I have a thought that the incident changed Smokey - before he may have been a golden color - this poster highlights that. If you haven't read the shipwrecked sailor - check it out. I really think it is the basis of the meeting of Richard and Smokey so many years ago. We are lead to believe that Richard is originally from the Black Rock, but what if he arrived on the island even way before the black rock. 100 years is a long time, but I'm thinking he is even older than that.

Check out the shiprwrecked sailor and let me know what you think - I can so see Smokey as the serpent in the story...

Just got back from having my Smokie print framed, 3-4 weeks. That's a bummer, but it's going to look awesome. Interesting thing happened to me while I was there: I was talking to a person who works there and while I was looking at the different frames, a man came in and picked up a painting he had framed. His name? Mr. John Lock. Spelling is different, but the second I heard Lock I turned around and laughed.

Anonymous said...

maven..neither did I..I don't really expect it. Its back into the low 100's in Phoenix today,,so the already slow mail service will get even slower. I can get a letter to the east coast faster than I can get a letter across town. Seriously,, 5 days from Mesa to north Phoenix. I once watched a postal clerk shuffle paper at his counter top for 10 minutes while 30 of us stood in line waiting for him to open up. Incredible. But no use making the Postal system the brunt of our frustration. A Print delivered, is better than none at all.

Interesting it is that Zort used the Hurley line about Smokie being analogous to a P. O. giraffe. That line has always been a smile to my face moment. IMHO.. it does have linkage to the Surreal. Salvidor Dali included burning giraffes and distorted giraffes in his art work. When asked about the " Burning Giraffe",, a giraffe on fire,,in a painting,, Dali replied that it represented the soul or conscience of the nation of Spain as it suffered under the convulsions of its civil war. That is from memory anyway. A pee O'ed giraffe indeed.

So.. from there its not to difficult to perceive Smokie as The Conscience...yes..the last stop security device,, the 3 headed dog Cerberus,,keeping the inmates of hell,,from escaping. Our Conscience.
Now..that opens up a lot of thought on.. what the heck does all the rest of LOST have to do with ,,Smokie as Conscience..This is where an effort in reading up on Surrealism and its founders,, pays off.

i'm not sure but the smoke monster poster were probably printed in the US. there are lots of able body printers in the US. the cost of shipping 300 posters from Austailia to the US along with the extra time and care to pack it properly would have been pretty expensive.

there are a few artists outside the US that just get there stuff printed in the US and sold here instead of dealing with overseas shipping.

Hope not....but apparently Dan doesn't read the contracts fine print or his fellow artists blogs..I wonder how upset he may get when told he has to surrender the actual silk screens..and all the left overs.

What is so LOST about the whole deal is..this whole frame started out on the clue of.. The death of Adam..the death of innocence by the way of the Knowledge of the apple.
And its been darkly reflective of that all along and up to and including Dans facebook blog...Magnificent!!....MEL

Nevermind, our dealings with Dan McC are over. He might be a nice person for all we know, let's just assume the best about him, that's the wise and magnanimous thing to do.

Very interesting stories RevMilo. A few years ago I saw a news clip about a daycare center that had cement block walls in their playground and they painted Disney characters on them for the kids....Disney made them whitewash over it. I don't think that Uncle Walt would have done something like that. He was a very shrewd cat when it came to business, but he also loved kids and they were important to him. :-p

But me, I'm wondering who the "observer" is...the one watching us, the artists, and everything.

Anonymous said...

Okay..so i switched out a foto i had in a burnished silver frame,,a grey, and put in Smokie... The greyish frame seems a good partner. The hue red is halfway way between black and white, so it matches well with the grey. Grey takes nothing away from the print.

Even more than before, I am impressed with composition of this print. Freeing my mind from as many prejudices as I can.. i see the whole of this print as a Mouth ,,yea,, Smokie is just like the tongue. The whole of this print is about to devour Eko. Again.. the fear and terror is well communicated.

There is one problem with this print. That is..where to hang it? Not relaxed enough for living room, dining room or bedroom. Definitely not in a kids room. A bit too precious for the shenanigans of the TV/ Romper room.Perhaps in the extra bedroom set aside for mother in law visits..??

ReverendMilo said...

& Capcom, there still may be hope for Disney. Remember, they severed Walt's head and cryogenically froze it to await the day when the when the world was read for his return (speculation is they have to wait, per his instructions, until the jews are gone, but who believes rumors?)

Anonymous said...

..a rather unfortunate choice in anecdotes to relate onto us , don't you think Rev? I think I am getting what you are saying,, but I'm not sure the young and impressionable minds of the " family" here, will get the point of how far the Disney Haters will go in expressing their venom.

and All this time,, i thought the observer,,was you. ;)

ReverendMilo said...

You got it dead on Mel.

Disney often deserves its criticism, but sometimes it is completely looney conspiracy theorists that are to blame for the unjustified impressions people have about Disney. (but remember, one key to making fun of Disney is to make fun of Walt, making fun of mickey is legal suicide)

And I am merely a participant that tries to be entertaining to the "observer". If you know you have a voyeur, you can pull the drapes closed, or like me dance around like an idiot to amuse them.

Who says it has to be all work for them, I really do hope they chuckle at us occasionally. :)

There will only, ever, be 300 of these prinst created. There will never be any produced edition beyond the 300 that is stated on the website. I wouldn't believe everything you see on the Internet, but each print is numbered to 300 because that's all that's being made in a run.

I'm going the same route with the cheap Michaels (even cheaper than $30).. At least for now. As long as Smokey doesn't judge me, I think I will be OK. I hesitate to wade into the fray here, but I'm sure this comment will be long forgotten by the time it's proven true:

Olly Moss and Dan McCarthy have had to retract their statements regarding being able to sell some portion of the first 100 of their prints not because they will not be allowed to, but because they are not allowed to say so yet.

If people know there will be another chance to purchase the posters, through another outlet, in the near future, at the same cost, it would hurt the chances of selling out the posters through DCPB.com.

This is speculation.

The Kharma Initiative said...

Shoxtp, did you get your print 'professionally' framed, matted, and mounted under glass, for $59?

ShoxTP said...

My Van wasn't matted, but it was mounted and done by "Pros". Looks great. Smokey will get taken on monday. IDK i don't plan to buy all of them, nor mat all of the ones i buy. (they are rather large and me and the framing lady agreed it would be too big, doesn't cost more but just the size factor). So the select few i buy automatically get framed. I can't wait to see the look on her face for this one. ha

I framed my Smokie print yesterday for...$200. Ouch, I know. But I figured, I have enough to frame them all cheaply or frame one really well. I chose the latter. Plus, I'm going to wait till I have enough money to frame them all real well. No shortcuts for me with these, they're going to my grave with me! I got mine matted with a white (and a little bit of black) matte with a black and red-trim wood frame. I'll take pics when it comes back in, should look great.

Amy Lynn said...

feeltheinsanity, that's how I felt, too. I actually went without the matte, because it looked too "big" to me with the matte, but I'm only going to have one or two of these prints, and didn't want to get a cheap frame that I'd have to replace in a few years.

Anonymous said...

FtI..and others,,when this event is over and all is assembled before me..hard choices will have to be made. Its very likely only my most favorite print will get the full blown matte/anti glare glass wazoo treatment. There fore,, i have taken a prudent step of going to Michaels and buying an assortment of frames while their sale is going on. Which print ends up in which frame, has yet to be determined..Perhaps no print will stay in one frame for very long. Perhaps all prints will have their moment of glory in a full blown matted frame. Even framing a print , can be outside the box.

As far as I know, I didn't change anything...just checking the site as I normally do in the same size screen.

Unknown said...

If you minimize or maximize your browser window you'll see the frames jump up and down in rows... it's all based on the size of the browser.

Still no clue ? Must be waiting for a bright start on Monday morning.

JMHO- I really love this blog. It was wonderful until this last poster. I have been a fan of LOST since the very beginning, I've joined in all the ARGs, listened to podcasts and I will continue to do so, but I don't want to listen to name-calling and negative attitudes. I love all you regulars and I'll be around, but I'm seriously considering withdrawing from here to avoid it. "Can't we all just agree to disagree?"
Please don't spit any of this vitriol my way...this is JMHO.
Thanks...

Hi Ellen! I agree with you Ellen. Everyone is supposed to be able to have their own fair opinion here at TLC without fear of name-calling or mean spirited snarkasm. That's why people have always liked to come here because it's always been different from most of the other forums an blogs, because people get respected here.

Not only is the recent unpleasantness of no intelligent use, but it puts a lot of unnecessary stress on Zort our admin, to have to deal with it. I second the motion to regain civility here and to be polite to each other. And, to not get uspet and take it personally if someone happens to accidentally express some of their disappointment in this crazy poster business. Let's make like a duck in the rain and let it roll of our backs. TLCers are supposed to be the Good Guys. :-x

Hi Sayid'sgirl!
happy, shiny love! We are all good friends here and we stay (at least I do anyway) because of the respect and civil discussions. It can be intense and very interesting, especially during the season of the show!

@Capcom...duckin' & rollin'! LOL!

Hi Ellen,
Know how you feel. I have been primarily a lurker but I have been following TLC and this blog almost since inception.

I'm hoping it will all turn back into "kumbyah and trust falls."

So, please don't go.

Ellen said...

sorry about the last comment, I'm still getting comments in my email from Post before last - I just unsubbed from that post...(sigh!)

i never knew lost fans were so kumbiya-y. learn something new everyday.

i figured the demo was 20 sumthang dudes, turns out it's housewives.

Much to my surprise,,and contrary to what I had believed,,The Crash print really works well the black, simple , lowest cost Michael's frame. It contains all of the very busy goings on of the print in simple eloquence,,that is all that is required for this print. The print just jumps out at you when hung on a white wall.

It's ok Ellen I know how you feel. The regs sometimes disagree but we always do it with kindness. And if we should step on someone's toes without meaning to we always apologize.
We'll also agree to disagree before it gets out of hand.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask,,At the DC&PB site,, in the hub, which i just visited hoping for a clue,,the frame nine ,,above 88 Keys saluting, there appeared a link to hearing his tune that leads to the reveal..Seriously folks..Of all the times I've visited that frame.. this is the first time I've seen the link. Is it new? How is it that despite all the visits, all the refreshes, It wasn't there before?

New Clue!!!
Melrose Tokyo. :)

Capcom said...

Dear Lord, please don't make us have to watch the new Melrose Place! :-o

JPL said...

@Mel - You are correct. I went to DC&PB to check it out on your last post and that's when the new clue popped up... so kudus to you for getting us all to go there. :)

(Not that we haven't been checking throughout the day - today's clue is brought to you by the letter "f" and the number "5")

So are we ready to go shopping? :)

Sandman90 said...

Maven, you called it!

Sandman90 said...

Is that clothing, maybe sweaters, hanging underneath the word Tokyo?

Amy Lynn said...

Are those scarves in the picture? Sweaters?

maven said...

Think it has to do with a clothing store...with the clothes hanging there. Melrose is a very trendy clothing area here in LA.

Amy Lynn said...

maven, does Melrose go through Little Tokyo?

maven said...

I'm trying to check that out now. When you Google Melrose Tokyo...Little Tokyo comes up often.

Capcom said...

Wow, I think that Zort should maybe shut down that other comments section, it's just serving no purpose now other than slinging mud at egos and hoping it sticks. No wonder Ellen un-subbed. The MIB must be pretty happy to have caused such a ruckus. ;-)

maven said...

As far as I can tell, Melrose does not run through Little Tokyo.

Anonymous said...

...wow..that was ...I don't know...what was that?

Anyway..yea..looks to be a fashion deal. Must remind myself to not over think..not over think.. not over think. Just a little ..little..tiny..tiny ..bit of wasabi sauce goes a long way.

Amy Lynn said...

There is, however, a Melrose Avenue in Tokyo.

I seen that melrose is a clothing store. They have store in Ca. Tx. Az. NM. that I seen.kk

Do you think it might be one of these stores?
I also seen they are hiring at several places. :)

Anonymous said...

The " CONNECTIVITY " continues.. when you search Melrose stores...listed is...Munky King..Johnny Cupcakes..sounding familiar?..so maybe the Japan LA store is up for some attention?...MEL

maven said...

Sayid'sGirl: But there doesn't seem to be a Melrose Store in Little Tokyo.

Hmmm ok.
I hope the reveal isn't actually in Japan. I'll have to get up in the middle of the night.

MJCarp said...

hahaha

Melrose Ave in Tokyo google earth looks like tea shop down side street

maven said...

Do we have any Japanese Lost fans here that might know something?

Anonymous said...

an unnecessary post

Tess315 said...

Maybe it not a Melrose store in little Tokyo but some other clothing store on Melrose ave. in little Tokyo.

Just wild guesses since I know nothing about the area.

maven said...

I don't see Melrose Ave. running through Little Tokyo (which is near the downtown Civic Center).

Tess315 said...

maven
Sorry. I did read that you had said that. Then some posts after that confused me. Not to hard to do. lol

Well I'm stumped already. :) Plus it's getting late for me.

Anonymous said...

There's nothing in the clue that says "Little" Tokyo.

Sandman90 said...

A little off topic here but I had a question about the hatch print. I know we had discussed it in a previous post about the unlikely possibility of it having either black light or glow in the dark. I can verify it does not glow in the dark but I'm not cool enough to own a black light. Since it does have the color scheme of the blast door map, I wondered if anyone had given that a go?

maven said...

Here's something tying Melrose and Tokyo (sort of) together and they do have an apparel line. They have a Melrose Ave. store location. It's called Tokidoki.

Scoutpost said...

My first thought (though probably incorrect) is an intersection of Melrose and Tokyo. Is there a Tokyo Rd/St? The clothes make me think of a dry cleaners- although that seems a little weird. Hopefully I'll be available for this reveal.

jeremy said...

I stumbled across an article describing a store on Melrose in LA called A Bathing Ape as "a super expensive retailer of...the Tokyo hip-hop lifestyle."

Any thoughts?

MJCarp said...

stores with Melrose and Tokyo connections

Fred Segal
Munky King (Clandestine connections, Toyko Toy

Selecta
Barracuda
Chico's
Xin
Crooks & Castles
Dita Legends
BAPE

Tess315 said...

lol scoutpost that was one of my first thought too. But I figured there probably wasn't that intersection.

MiddayShadows said...

I do think the intersection of the words is important. If not literally, then figuratively. Maybe something like "cross Melrose with tokyo" or "where Melrose and Tokyo meet..."

bonesaw said...

Lotteryticket is probably right on... seems like it would be a clothing store that has locations in Tokyo as well as on Melrose in LA.

MiddayShadows said...

the same way they made crumbs out of the words "Wall St and Larchmont" for a reveal that eventually involved Crumbs bakery.

Ginger said...

Tokidoki was at Comic Con.

Anonymous said...

googling "intersection of melrose & tokyo" will get you in the right direction". The words are intersected for a reason. It's very possible that the artist might lead back to Clandestine Industries here, there is a path that goes there. I've found 2 possible artists from this clue.

MJCarp said...

oh gosh, not the Beastie Boys again!

maven said...

@Jeremy: A Bathing Ape store is having the release of their Winter Collection on Oct. 20th!

justanothersky said...

@Anonymous:
Not sure whether it's been mentioned before but Jensen Carp runs / owns both Clandestine Industries & Gallery 1988. And he's the guy in that photo shaking hands with Damon & Carlton.

So yeah, of course everything on DCaaPB eventually leads back to him & his business...

MJCarp said...

Think Joop

MiddayShadows said...

@Anon and
@justanothersky

those are both good leads!

that Jensen Carp /Clandestine Industries / Gallery 1988 lead is really interesting

1Miletogo said...

How about - Pinkberry frozen yogurt

One location in Little Tokyo at 332 E Second St LA
one location at 7123 Melrose Ave , Los Angeles, CA

The sweaters hanging are because it is Frozen Yogurt and cold

This follows my thoughts of each reveal being centered around a character, this one would be for Frogurt

What do you think?

MJCarp said...

Fred Segal carries Clandestine fashion.

So, to sum it up:

We have blue letters "Tokyo and Melrose" with stripe & solid sweaters/shirts hanging from the YO in Tokyo

We located "Melrose Ave in Tokyo" via Google Earth - looks like tea shop.

We have also located a number of clothing stores with connections to Clandestine Industries and Tokyo on Melrose Avenue in LA.

justanothersky said...

@MiddayShadows:

So far some of the Lost poster artists have also been part of Gallery 1988's exhibitions in the past. So that does help narrowing the pool of artists a little bit.

But can't say that's any help to solve individual clues or the location of each url reveal.
