Deus ex machina 542

Wow. That was a busy week, and nerve-racking. A lot of people received refunds from Todd Slater last night. Now we have the weekend to prepare for the next drop, Kevin Tong for The Hatch.

Kevin will sell 45 copies via his online store for $200 each, plus shipping. The Hatch will go on sale Monday January 11, 2010 at noon PST… which is Greenwich Mean Time minus 8 hours. Kevin placed everything you need to know in his Newsletter.

Thank you and have a great weekend.

Anne...of course you are absolutely correct about the alcohol! And who could forget (well I did) Juliet swigging the Dharma Rum on the beach after the freighter explodes?

And yes, it is limiting to just be picking a favourite assistant from the Russell T Davis revivals.

Mungonna - I have hope that Eloise is actually attempting to break the cycle. Just because she tells Des that it is futile to change anything because destiny has a way of correcting itself does not necessarily mean that she is not trying to change the outcome of things...only that she was manipulating Des into believing this.

Oh, sorry, yeah, the current run of Doctor Who. I've only ever seen the Patrick Trougton assistants in the animated versions, it had the Cybermen in it. Either way, I was more shocked at how short the dresses were in those days.

And I thought they were short now !!! Even the male assistant's kilt was a bit too short for my liking. Really must re-watch that story arc again.

Oh and am off to bed, goodnight everyone, thanks for the headache with the Ouroboros theories and stuff. Won't be able to watch Red Dwarf without a headache from now on.

Good night!

The value of MacCutcheson..is that you Thor?
Perhaps twisted,,but i got the feel that Widmore was equating Penny..to a bottle of the Mac. You will never taste Mac, you will never marry my daughter..Did he know that the two, Dez and Penny, had been co-habitating for so long? Guess not...So much for the value of his daughter and thus..the value of the Mac.

It is ALL subjective,,and what You don't know can surely screw up your perception as well as what you do know.

So..the value of the Mac..exclusive high brow.. to..it was on the shelf of the sports bar Dez visited to get take a whack to the head..middle brow..to Free swillage by Dez himself on the beach.rather low brow..Its freekin amazing how EVERYTHING in LOST has an arc..simply amazing. And the last we saw of the Mac? Poor Sayid making point of subjectivity with it..and thus..oh schitt..insuring his Path..back to the Island.

If I had some,,I'd raise a shot of Mac...to toast the Beauty of MacCutcheson. That is the only value anything can have.

@Futureself: Good point about the price, interesting thought. Devil's advocate, it's possible it's a continuity slip because they never defined a price.

MacCutcheon pretty certainly is in the Widmore scene a metaphor for Penny. Not clear how she's his crowning achievement, but maybe he thinks so. And in fairness, Des says he currently has no job - so it was definitely worth more than he made in a week!

Has anybody made prop bottles of it, I wonder? Will have to check the RPF. In the Brave New World of product integration, it'd have been . . . what, Macallan? (Might have been the inspiration for the name?)

RE: Dr Who assistants: I quite liked Teegan. Very unpopular choice! I was young ;) Dressed up as Ace for Halloween one year (no one got it) so she counts too. No opinion on new seasons really, haven't seen most of it.

I thought the Lost special was pretty good...a lot from a fan perspective...nothing really new, though.

mungonna said...

also..yes there has been Dharma booze popping up all over the place..but..it seems to me, that Dez did not stock the shelves of the pantry or any where else in the Swan with booze. Yes, Sawyer mite of got booze from the pallet drop..Julies rum was before Dez's time..yes, Inman and Dez got drunk..but afterwards?? The subtle point is..Dez'es commitment to the 108 minute challenge , was made by keeping sober. That Inman and Dez contemplated turning the FailSafe switch while drunk..seems quite fitting,,as that would have ended the 108 button pushing. Again.. the juxtaposition of sanity/insanity with sober/drunk..brings out interesting conflicts of assumptions. Having a few, may actually bring one to clarity of vision,,sanity. Perhaps I need a few rite now.

Hmmm - Des was also 'found' in the gutter after a heavy night of drinking by Brother Campbell. At the monastery was trained to endure, whilst sober, the long periods of silence and loneliness he would later face in the Swan. Getting drunk led to his expulsion from the order and him meeting Penny.

AND,,do not forget how Good Julie appeared ..drinking wine after having her way with Goodwin!

Hey there ARG peeps!

I got home from work just a little while ago and found LOST G1988 art waiting for me AND Hurley's Curse from Tim Doyle -- YAY! I have to eat dinner and get some work stuff done, then OPEN (if I have any energy left)!

ChrisL's post this morning gave me a bit of a heads up, but it's a little weird that we all got received our G1988 stuff within a day of each other.

LOST talk -- fun! Des was out drinking, he doesn't know what happens but then is "found", awakened, by Brother Campbell and taken to Moriah. Somehow, Ruth's brother Derrick finds Des and this seems to be what leads to Des getting drunk on the monastery's wine and getting kicked out, to have Penny conveniently waiting. So all someone had to do was tip Derrick off about Des to set the next phase in motion.

maybe MacCutcheon's only has one type of batch (not likely), but releases it each year. Widmore could have a 25 year old bottle of MacCutcheon's while the pub had a 3 year old bottle.

I really like Brother Campbell as some sort of relative to Elowheezie. Organized religion is rather dependent on the concept of ' Destiny".

So, yes, as pointed out, it is metaphoric goodness that upon throwing Dez out, there is the Good person of Penny in coincidental time and space. Which, as it turns out,,leads to relationship , a union, that Elowheezie claimed no destiny for, by thumbs downing the wedding ring that Dez wanted.Yet the union of Dez and Penny produces a child. Dez'es one fingered salute to Destiny, in a twisted way,, continues with him drubbing Ben and throwing him in the drink. Fascinating..out rite Fascinating,,how that action by Dez..is connected with what becomes of Ben back on the Island.

Early on,Dez was motivated by guilt. Regrets leading to guilt for not doing or being, led to the sorrow being washed away by booze. Monastic reality was still, not being or doing. In the long run,it didn't solve a thing. Same with the Swan Hatch..loosing oneself in monotonal work day routine, without any True purpose to his being, finally brought clarity of vision,,turning the fail safe switch, liberating the Mystical Powers of the Island, and Dez ending up like a new born, naked to the world. Changed. As painful as it was,,Dez had to watch Failure in the persona of Charlie,,die. Once self defeatism was done away with, then and only then could Dez get to being, the Love that Penny had known possible. One may say it was his Destiny. No, it was all his choices,,all his fighting back to find Love he once knew,,other wise,,his destiny would have been found at the bottom of a bottle...imho.

If Dez Penny and son Charlie,,sail off into the sunset, never to be seen again,,that would be okay by me. But,,this is Lost we're talking about, so,,anything is possible.

Patmc, I'm interested in reading about your homemade framing ideas.

Murghbatwar, have you already mentioned which piece(s) you purchased from Gallery1988?

ChrisL, thrilled that you've received your ScottC! They must be sending things that valuable (and costly) via overnight express! Would also explain the simultaneous arrivals of art all over the world.

@MEL, just read your treatise on Faraday. You're a genius! Explaining the breakdown at the piano...the folly Follies...now you have me writing elliptically...I sense a Joseph Campbell follower..."Follow your Bliss"

Has anyone here read David and Leigh Eddings' Belgeriad/Mallorean series?

Just read about Milo and his Linuses! YAY! I am green. Did Kirk make the envelope too? KEEP THE LINUSES AWAY FROM THE BABY FOR EVERYONE'S SAKE.

The Kharma Initiative said...

Oh, and a series of updates from Kevin Tong on his blog:

"UPDATE: I have heard from other artists selling their Lost Posters that the high demand can compromise the inventory control. There is a possibility of overselling and refunds will be issued in that eventuality.

UPDATE: Since this item is going to be fully insured, I will need to declare the full value ($200) on this item on the customs form. If you are an international buyer, it will mean that you need to pay taxes on it. Normally I try to help you guys out, but in this case, every step needs to be taken to ensure the security of these prints."

thorsten said...

Thanks, Andrew!

Drama said...

oh wow. So with a $200 value on a tube, the UK import will a) keep it snagged for about two weeks extra, and b)as import duty is vague at the best of times, it will slap anywhere between an additional £30 - £80 on to the posters price (that's about $50 - $130).

Best of luck getting these. I really liked 'em, but not at that cost and hassle.

ChrisL said...

Ben, I'm feeling the same way. That's a big problem.

ChrisL said...

If I'm lucky enough to get one I shall need to have it shipped to a US address and have it collected from there afterwards. it's only £30 to get it shipped 2 day FedEx and you can't get much more secure than that in my experience.

futureself said...

Can we not get all the tubes sent to Ann Arbor and have Captain Bird sub them over?

futureself said...

Milo, my limited tech resources due to the dust is still settling after my move means I'm having problems checking this but if memory serves correctly (and it rarely does) the MacClutcheon's in the pub is the same year as Widmore's bottle (?) I am starting to remember why I locked down discussing this back in June though ;)

ChrisL said...

I hadn't noticed anyone had posted anything on it so I asked questions about the Olly Moss up on ebay. The one which is UK based and has Olly's signature on the back. I wanted to know where, when, how it was signed and the circumstances of it coming about etc, The answer I got;

"i would rather not give details on places/times unfortunately..i know how important the integrity of the campaign is..(which has got more to go)
okay it's signed on the reverse.i can tell you there is no signiture on the front of the poster and no number...it is an original though but literally one of the first...i guarantee it. I will leave it up to you..."

So it's sounding like it may be a proof...

MiddayShadows said...

Wow ChrisL, that is actually quite interesting because apparently almost all of the prints were printed by D&L in Seattle. It could be that Olly's was not one of those, and that his was printed in the UK. Then it's possible there this is yes, a printer's proof.

Perhaps his concern about the "the integrity of the campaign" alludes to this copy being one that is outside of the original run of 300.

Is it numbered? Do we know? Interesting...

MiddayShadows said...

Ah, yes, sorry should've re-read the quote. Very tired - up way too late here.

So, yes, sounds like a proof, not 1 of the 300. If so, there are 301 of these in circulation after this sale (well, taking into consideration there are 49 or 50 disney/ABC are holding onto).

ChrisL said...

Too many spelling mistakes so re-post!!

Midday, the response I got was that it is not numbered. I can't imagine it's one of the 300 as I'm sure there was supreme control over those so I guess it must be an additional print. As you said, I thought these were all printed in the US. Why would Olly print them here in the UK? This does taste like a proof though. Not only that, if Olly has signed it on the back, it could be the sign off proof prior to print would would actually be pretty nice to have. The fact that she's reluctant to tell where and when the sig took place makes me think even more that it's a printers sign off copy.

@Kharma Initiative - I wanted to do something extra special framing-wise for my LOST posters, seeing as they're going to be hanging on my walls for many years to come. I've read some on-line about building your own frames, but it will definitely be a trial and error effort on the first frame or two. As a base, I'm using some crown molding that I bought at Home Depot. I've got some other things that I want to try, but I don't want to share just yet, in case they don't work out. I'll try to document it as best I can... but it's going to take a while I think.

@Mel - Thanks for the tips about the clamps for my framing. I'll have to check around... maybe harbor freight for some cheapo ones.

@Zort - I took some pictures of the Tim Doyle print, specifically of the promised "Doodle" he added. It is a small Mr. Cluck, and under it, it says "Eat Less Chicken"... LOL Let me know what email address is the best to send them to. I also took a picture of the letter he sent with it, but I'm going to email Tim to make sure he's OK with me having you post it...

As an added bonus, Tim was kind enough to send along a random print from his other work, along with "The Numbers". How cool is that? I got a "gig" poster for a group called "The Detroit Cobras". Leave it to my wife to spot a hair that is stuck on the print. If it is Tim Doyle's hair... does that make it more valuable? :-)

I'm off to bed. Stayed up WAY too late playing computer games! Good night all!

ReverendMilo said...

I think they will dip and re-rise after the season ends. We still have the profiles in history auction ahead and Comicon SD, both of those will keep the value of almost any Lost collectible in the upper range after the season ends.

Talking about # of prints in circulation- does anyone else think the 1/1 prints sold at G88 mean they actually printed 301 for sale in the end, not the 300 number that was on the DCAPB site? Two editions?

ChrisL said...

Just Thinking, I don't know that they could mark our prints ?/300 if there were 301, it wouldn't make sense.

Just Thinking said...

Chris Yes- but 1/1 doesn't either if there are 300. So, 1/1 and ?/300 = 301? Just saying it seems they printed an extra one when they said there were only going to be 300. Doesn't much matter to me- just curious.

ChrisL said...

I agree JT, printed 301 and I guess they define that being a single edition on it's own by the additional signatures. That was the only difference wasn't it?

Except for Locke's Secret of course where there appears to be 302!

Just Thinking said...

And the origin of 302 seems to be an appropriate Secret.

ChrisL said...

And the description on that item says

"An original - 1 of 200 ever made"

Aside from the obvious contradiction, it seems to me to be a seller that doesn't really know what's going on.

Just Thinking said...

Do prints get numbered as they go along, so that say 2/300 is actually the second print of the run? Was wondering if G88 could number the 1/300 as 1/1 somehow. Or maybe they did get the 1/1 proofs to the Gallery to show them what the posters were going to be, and then sold them.

Being a genius tho,,alls one can do, is disappoint expectations, rather like the 2nd album by any rock band.
So..rock on andalone!

Afternoon peeps!

Just checking in from work. A UK meetup is tempting. I have an uncle in the UK and could probably fly out and back faster (and cheaper) than Hawaii -- though of course not as warm right now.

The G1988 1/1 are a separate run as LT explained, not part of the 300. But I don't think technically they are artists proofs or printer proofs. They are a special run intended just for the G1988 event.

Milo and Martyn -- too funny!

How is the coffee today, MEL?

Intriguing idea, ObFuSc8.

maven said...

I don't know what's in MEL's coffee, but mine is delicious! LOL

Martyn said...

Yeah, I meant the finale. Don't think I could choose between Hawaii and Zort's place to be honest.

Just Thinking said...

Yep Thorsten- York is a hop away- often go there-though we try to avoid the summer traffic. {Maine this is - not England)

Thanks Ob8 about the prints. Hmm- then that "limited to an edition of just 300" was stretched just a little.

The coffee is cooling down as I am lifted by its caffeine. My empty stomach is having slite difficulty with the see saw tho. Did enjoy your pictures too. Hide Tide indeed! Reminds me that a load of laundry is in my very near future. The coffee will wash the food down. Stay warm!

Its fun being where I am from.

Does anyone know how many colours (oops, sorry, colors) were used for The Hatch?

Martyn said...

I'm counting three.

Sam G said...

Pink, yellow, green, black

Sam G said...

and blue on the edges

Martyn said...

It's blue paper, so didn't count that.

chaseter said...

Olly is a guy, not a girl.

-charter

mungonna said...

Colours in the Hatch?..depends on how many blues..very dark blue..medium dark blue...maybe even a lighter blue than medium, the blue of the paper itself seen around the edge,,then the red and green and then the yellow. I see 6 colours...an art teacher in school once ding'ed me for spelling " color" as c o l o u r..I have yet to forgive him.

MEL

ChrisL said...

charter, the 'she' referred to the ebay seller who appears to be female.

chaseter said...

You can mix colors to make a different color. As in using black and then blue to create a darker blue. That is what they do instead of using blue and dark blue.

-charter

ChrisL said...

And that's an assumption on my part from their user name.

chaseter said...

I have seen Olly referred to as a girl a lot of places....even in articles about him! Even though Olly is short for Oliver, which is totally a guys name in the UK!

ChrisL said...

So charter, any thoughts on number of screens used in The Hatch? I'm impressed by the breadth of the colours KT has created. And I haven't even seen it in person (yet :-)), but it's clear to see from the quality images out there. We've 3 - 6 so far.

thorsten said...

Now you got me thinking, Ben…

Martyn said...

Or Ben, you could share right now?

Just a suggestion.

ChrisL said...

Sounds good Ben whatever it is.

WHATABURGER!!!!..gessh,no kidding..that jump suite Tom won really wouldn't fit him. Nice sunny day there in Texas. Glad to see youall enjoying it. Who took the picture? Next time,,have it so you aren't squinting. Sun glasses wouldn't have been a bad idea either. This is the web you know. So, did you have lunch at the Whadda? They put mustard on their burgers. So, when I want something different , out ofthe ordinary, I go there.

So does anyone have any thoughts on the Candidate?

Lapidus is special. Locke was special too but the two personalities are very different. Lapidus is sceptical and questioning and more importantly he wants to leave the Island. He seems like the most honest character too. Whereas Locke, at the beginning of Season 1 in particular, seemed very shady, Lapidus’s character has never been in doubt - in my mind at least.

So my question relates to something that has bothered me since Season One ~ why did Smokey kill the pilot? It has to be to do with Lapidus who was supposed to be piloting that day. So assuming this logic is reasonable, did Smokey kill the pilot because he was not Lapidus, or because Smokey though he was Lapidus?

Amy Lynn said...

@futureself... I've always thought it was because he wasn't Lapidus.

ReverendMilo said...

Yep that's DocArtz!

He and the whole family are moving across the continent and were passing through north Texas.

Super nice guy, great little family, they ate whataburger while I went for Taco Bueno on the long drive back.

We met in a sufficiently Texas podunk town where even google maps has no real good idea where anything is. I only knew that the Whataburger was where it was and not 4 miles east in the dead center of the intersection of the two state highways nearby.

So that does now make three known uber-setters, each with some distinct cool variations in their collections :)

Future Self..going way back to your comment..that maybe Elowheezie was just trying to manipulate Dez into believing in Destiny. Its possible. That would leave open her returning to the show in a cab. But, the idea that she knows something of the future, season 6,that we don't,takes season 6 out of the Losties hands, and places it into hers and or Charles Widmores, perhaps even MIB. Since MIB appears to be more than just opposite, but Above wheezie and upchuck,, i'm inclined to see season 6 in the hands of MIB.

Unless it is their deaths by hanging from a banyun tree..and no tieing of their feet; i really want to see their feet kicking and jerking, I don't like either in season 6. As Matt Fox said, there is redemption in season 6 and Elowheezie and/or Widmore, appear of the age that they cannot even change at, much less want to change.

Perhaps in a flashback, or forward, they will appear. Any " destiny" issues being clarified then. There is only one way of knowing tho.

Excellent Rev..Freekin amazing confluence of Time and Space. Doc Artz ..a Big Way to Go!! for recognizing the need. A small gesture that is beyond value.

Rev..may good fortune continue as you progress on the project. My eyes water tells me its time to put the laundry in the drier.

Rev...what podunk town in NT was this?

futureself said...

Well Mel, Ellie has said that for the first time she does not know what is going to happen. I happen to like Eloise so perhaps that is why I am quick to look for motivations beyond repeating the cycle. That her actions have been to break the chain of events.

But I know what you mean. I understand the level of disgust for her actions. If they are simply to continue the future of the past then it equates to consuming your offspring to replenish your own youth. Stagnation rather than progress. Living to exist.

AAh!..why did Smokie kill the pilot?
Some points first. The pilot had been drinking. Remember,,he tossed one or two down quickly ,,made the comment about his mother-in-law. So..what little we about the pilot, himself,is that he ,,like the Losties,,had some baggage on board as well. But what else do we know? For one..He was responsible for the plane..therefore..responsible for ,,getting lost over the pacific,,and most importantly..for the plane flying over the Island,,or..bringing the situation for the rest of the story to be told.

Therefore..how Smokie is defined,,is just as important or a major part of the question and answer, as the question itself. Smokie Killed the Pilot Because Smokie Don't Like Being Acknowledged. Smokie Don't Like Being " Discovered",, Explored", Brought To The Attention Of". Smokie Likes IT..nice and dark in the recesses of the Island. Denial of that which brings Awareness of our own Smokie,,is first reaction. We tend to kill off our own Pilot, out of fear.

Frank Lapidus..yea.. why is he still along for the ride? The element of should've been/ could've been is there. Take that into the future, along with his calm steady handiness, and the future looks like an approachable destination for all. I await a futuristic twist of his great line.." We're not going to Guam, are we?"

MEL

ChrisL said...

The look on Frank's face when he said that line... priceless.
