ImAnnie -- I agree with futureself. Feel free to do whatever you want with your prints, for whatever reason you wish.

I only took issue to your encouraging others on this forum, that others flip (yes FLIP) Locke's Secret.

Needing money is one thing. But suggesting "that shocking amount of money" could be used to buy "all LOST blu ray, a blu ray reader, some other pieces of art" or "10 days in America, flight included" is the very definition of flipping.

I ask again that you refrain from this type of post here.

Thanks you.

I want to say something about what it means for someone to be a flipper, and why it upsets others. This isn't any statement against anyone in this community, it's a general one.

There's a HUGE difference between selling something because you have to, and selling it because you're greedy.

Flipper:
- purchased only to resell for more money
- sells for as much money as possible, by setting price high or starting auction high and falsely creating "market value"
- hoards items which do not sell

Reseller:
- purchased with intent to keep
- sells because they must, or because they change their tastes and want something to go where it's appreciated
- sells item at cost, OR lets market set price by taking offers or starting eBay auction at their cost (NOT "market value")

I don't think it's a difficult distinction between really unethical behavior and acceptable behavior that no one would take offense at. Some flippers at least are not unfair in how they do it, and some resellers who originally bought a piece because they wanted it exploit the secondary market unfairly. Which just worsens the situation and drives prices up more.

Sorry, this is something that has come up a LOT in a collector's community that I'm in, one where nothing sells for RETAIL below $400. So flipping REALLY hurts. I have seen $800 items sell for $4,000.

Unknown said...

Flipping vs Reselling is basically how the excuse falls.

I personally think if you buy a poster and sell it within a short period of time of receipt you're flipping it. If you post that its because you need to pay for books or rent or whatever... you're still flipping it. The public intention might be better, but it doesn't change the intent when it was bought.

If you hold onto something for years and it appreciates and you sell it, that's mroe of a reseller thing. You didn't buy it to try and gouge someone immediately, and you held onto it and 'earned' its appreciation with that investment.

Just my two cents... I just think that there are WAY too many people who sell these posters right away and say 'i need to pay for books' or rent or food or whatever. It sure sounds a lot more sympathetic, but I think a lot of these people are doing a lot better than they let on.

No, I agree with you 100%. I didn't specify it but I meant reselling due to a genuine emergency (sudden medical or vet bill, for example), or after a significant amount of time passed. Certainly people make excuses and try to capitalize on their own poor financial planning/impulse buy, or just to cover what was flipping from the start.

But you kind of have to give people the benefit of the doubt on that one, or else you'd never be able to sell anything without someone jumping down your throat.

Unknown said...

@ Anne --

I agree. Things do happen, but I just think they happen very rarely when they are cited as the reason very often -- especially now in 'this economy.'

It's part of the game, i know, but its frustrating. Especially when I missed the Crash poster due to PayPal not allowing me to use a mastercard and then three people all offered it for $400... and one of them cited needing money for school to make it right.

And I end my rant now :)

Joe D said...

Tan sold his crash prints?

ObFuSc8 said...

Why do you ask Joe D?

Limbofunk said...

He meant the hatch

i'm LOST said...

I think if you purchase an item because you are interested in it and the world/community it represents, and then demand forces value to skyrocket, your willingness to part with said item may change...this does not constitute flipping. Flipping means that the item is purchased on spec with the INTENT to turn it around and sell it to the highest bidder. Speaking as a toy collector, these are the people who wait outside Toys R Us in the morning (they are there every day) for it to open and RUN to a particular aisle to scoop up AS MANY rare figures/Hot Wheels etc as they can. These are then put on Ebay immediately for profit. If they do not sell the items are simply returned to the store. As a collector, I have purchased items, and had them in my collection for a while, sometimes for years-items I PRIZE, I might add. But occasionally the price for these items goes so high that I feel that by selling them, I would benefit more than owning it. At the end of the day, everyone needs to remember that these are simply pieces of paper with an image on it...no more, no less. I don't think ImAnnie was suggesting that OTHERS do anything with their posters, just that if it were up to him, that is what HE would choose. Not ONE of the items that I own (and I own a LOT of rare collectibles is sacred, and above selling. After all, selling an item simply generates more money for me to do something I love-collect.

Joe D said...

Joe D said...

Ah, right, he meant hatch, Phew! thought I missed trying again

I think drsluggo meant to type The Hatch.

Whoops.. yeah I meant the Hatch! I guess I have the Crash print in my head because people were talking about it earlier :)

futureself, thanks for your interp of it, wonderful, and enlightning!

ObFuSc8 said...

ARGers, I did not mean to set off a debate on flipping/reselling, etc.

Zort has asked before that we refrain from simply posting sales here, and of course there is some leeway given the demand of this poster series.

Again, each of us may do whatever we wish with our prints. And of course everyone is entitled to their opinions.

ImAnnie was indeed suggesting that others sell/flip their prints:

"I have to give a hint to all of those who possess Locke's Secret and aren't "rich" (The Crash too)."

It is this type of comment that I'd prefer not to see posted here.

So I've decided not to keep all my prints, since I really don't have a place to put them. So before I sell, I'll make an attempt at trying to get a Locke's Secret. I have the following that I am letting go of, and I am will to part with 3 or 4 of them in exchange for Locke's Secret. You pick the 3 or 4 and let me know if you want to trade:
1.Dharma Van
2.Love Triangle
3.4 Toed Statue
4. Smoke Monster
5. The Hatch
6. Ben Linus
7. Polar Bear
8. The Barracks

And I'll pay for shipping too.

@Max: (You have people outside the Toysizus every day? Wow.) Maybe so, but I think you have to know that kind of comment is likely to stir up a hornet's nest.

Which I was not intending to stir up further, sorry. I was concerned that Annie seemed confused about what people were upset by versus not.

Unknown said...

@ Trial Attorneys-

i don't have a Locke's Secret to trade, but if you do decide to sell either the Hatch or Ben definitely let me know. I'll send you an email just in case..

thanks

Dan said...

I couldn't agree more with what Max said.

Amy Lynn said...

I agree with what everyone has said, pretty much. But my perspective, really, is that I value prints depending on how I got them. I'd be MUCH more likely to trade/sell my Locke's Secret than I would Smokey, Ben, WK or the Barracks... why?

Because Smokey was the first print I bought, and Ben, WK and the Barracks I obtained from LOSTArgies who went out of their way (really, a lot) to help me. I have memories with them, y'know? :) I feel very fortunate to have obtained Locke's Secret, and I'm sure I'll love it, but to me, the worth isn't as great.

mungonna said...

..I think the epic prices on Ebay for LFA prints are a scam. Its not like the SEC is watching over EBAY,,yet everyone quotes it as if it is the Dow Jones. Your best buddy " buying" from you on Ebay..isn't exactly unheard of.

Yea. we've been around this bush enough times. If the prints talk to you in the language of the dollar,,well,,give on to Rome what is Romes. But I am sure the admin has made it clear,, this ain't Rome.

Me..I've been watching TV since Uncle Milty. So when a show like LOST comes along,,there is an appreciation by me,,that few here can fathom. It don't speak in dollars. Any Art Project inspired by the show and as closely linked to the show,,has no Emperor on its coinage.

People will do as they please with the prints they own. Just don't come here to price gouge - it's annoying. Now if you're offering yourself up for the gouging, like Goodwin on Anna Lucia's stick, then you're probably a fairly desperate fan. Can you put a price on desperation? Some people believe so and that's how they quantify that emptiness, void, hunger. I personally have sold (at cost) to other Losties on the basis of their desperation and had I not picked up on that from posts here, then they would be without. And turning over posters was as good for me as it was for them. While I admire the prints I possess, I have to remind myself that it's all just stuff and it's really the memories of the ARG and more specifically my interactions with those in this community that make it special. If ebay is your thing, I think you have every right to do that. However, I would hate to tarnish the memory of participating in this ARG with the idea that I stuck it to someone at LostARGS. Official end of drifting thoughts, must be time for bed - lights out.

MJCarp said...

Amy Lynn, MEL, Sandman90 thank you.

So, we have a bit of a hitch in the system - you have a print that needs a new home and want reach out to LOST fans first. We have suggested on more than one occasion

DarkUFO's ARG thread trade/buy/sell

were you will most likely find LOST fans. Dark has been generous to keep this thread open, please use it. Your consideration not to post here would be appreciated.

Amy Lynn said...

I think the majority of people WOULD prefer to post here... as long as it's once, and not every. single. day. That's just wearing to read, and not endearing.

I don't post on DarkUFO, mostly because I'm not allowed to, but because I never found it a particular hospitable place to be.

I'm not going to use Dark Ufo.. as others have said, one advert here by interested parties is enough. Unfortunately, some posters are obssessed with the money they could get for their prints, but it IS related to the ARG, like it or not, so we should humour them. And a site this popular will attract "passing trade", it comes with the territory. I think everyone does a good job at ignoring the eBay ads that are ridiculous, and mocking those that defend their high prices.

@Robperrin I'd didn't see you arrive... is a 4.5cm mount on a 2cm frame. Thin, but it doesn't detract from the pic that way.

Thanks, everyone for the kind words.. I think they look pretty sexy too!

I am tired of coming on here and hearing everyone complaining about flipping. Yes it sucks but none of us have the right to judge why someone is selling their prints. My only issue with flipping is 'whoring.' I hate it when people advertise their sales every where. It is annoying. I also hate it when people over price things. If someone sells their posters and someone buys them, it is really none of my business or anybody else's. These comment sections have become real downers:(

Can we not rejoice with Alice for winning a free trip to Hawaii instead of boohooing about someone selling a print. The show starts in less than 20 days! Lets move on. Not everyone is going to get a print. There were less than 250 and thousands upon thousands of people trying to get them. Of course some people are going to be sour grapes about it but that would still happen regardless of flippers. Some people in here look down on flippers but you aren't really any better than them if you constantly berate them and spit in their face.

When are we suppose to get the messages in a bottle? Anybody know? OH AND CONGRATS ALICE! ENJOY!

bad dum-pshh!

and continued:"...by May do they mean they may do it..?"

...maybe it was a clue ...:)

Hi all!

Must of misinterpretid what imannie was saying, I thought she was saying, for the price of Locke you can get a holiday, so don't pay over the odds for it and go on holiday instead, as after all, it is just a poster.

Anyway, the aim of the website is to liberate the posters from the flippers, is it not? The poster I bought on Monday is one less we'll see on eBay now, as are the other ones that people have bought off of eBay.

But yeah, advertise once, if no-one bites, take the hint, no one wants it and lower your asking. Or put it on eBay or eb where people go to look for it. And the STV forum is a bit of a mess now for trades, the first post hasn't been updated in ages so I'm guessing people are still being asked have you still got... No I haven't, it's long gone, leave me alone! So I can see why some people advertise on here.

Morning all.

My two pence…..

I don’t have an issue with someone reselling anything. I’d go as far as to say the word “flipper” doesn’t exist in my mind. Everyone selling is It’s just another reseller, be it for pure commercial gain or circumstance.

I think tempers fray when a reseller tries to sell here because it tends to rub salt in the wounds of those people who missed out on the sale to begin with, or have missed out on one of the other prints and remember how gutted they felt.

Personally, I don’t blame any reseller for making profit on this. The reseller is not setting the price, the market is. There is a point where we would ALL sell; It just never reached out price point or we never owned the print to begin with. Some of the resellers are in it just for the money, some are fans who have seen the demand/value rise and it has now reached their personal tipping point.

If there is an obvious fault (or genius) in the system, it lies with the producers for not allowing a print run large enough to meet the needs of the audience. It’s not uncommon to have a run of 500 to 1000. There is no rule; it could have been 5000. But they didn’t.

If the producers were worried about fans being ripped off, they could have used a multitude of readily available registration systems or simply commissioned a second edition run. But they have obviously chosen not to and the hype that surrounds that only adds to the Lost phenomenon.

This whole thing is a marketing project and it’s worked a treat. The “flipping” is part of the process. It’s got us scrambling, talking, and pining. It’s a shame that money so blatantly talks, but if it didn’t, Lost would probably not have been made in the first place.

I think Imannies comment could only help. The more that come on the market, the quicker the price will drop!

So…in true mercenary style. I have a nice crisp $50 note for the first person to give me The Crash ;)

RE. the Hurt Locker, the ending is supposed to have that 'out of place' tacked on feeling. Don't want to give the ending away, but you have to put yourself in the place of the main characture and it makes sense. Huge fan of that movie, and it's my favorite movie of the past year. It's intense, but worth the ride.

As for all the flipping/reselling debate, I have to say that I may be looking to part with one or two prints. Now, I'm not going to use this as a forum to do that (in fact, going to give the prints away to my friends who are into LOST but missed on the poster series, but since I had the mindset recently to 'sell or keep', I feel I have to pipe in with my viewpoint. My intention with the prints was to never resell them, but then I never expected to get into active print collecting either. I started to collect prints mid-way through, and then the debate became "do I get the LOST print or do I get this other print?". Now, I have more prints that I have wall space. Some I'm going to keep, but others I just don't feel the same about anymore. Out of the LOST prints I have, I really don't have signifigant attachment to 3-4 of them. My taste have changed, and by no means am I a 'flipper'. I'm a collector who has had a change of taste and would like to have those prints go to someone who will appreciate them more than I do.

ObFuSc8 said...

Well, that might pretty much lock me out of one of those first 108 spots. I figure there will be the usual 2 day wait between class 1 and 2...I maybe able to just sneak in on Sunday.

"Hi Ray

Thanks for the email. THe move went fairly well - I'm just getting settled in.

I spoke to my shipper last night and she tells me that she's just ordered some extra strong poster tubes to protect the prints. There was some concern over whether the regular ones would be up to the task - especially with such an expensive print! Better safe than sorry in this case. She will begin shipping as soon as they arrive - so probably some time next week. I will send out confirmations when the posters have shipped.

Cheers man.

I'm quite proud I remained spoiler free all this time. The video at SPiN sorta ruined that a little but oh well. So thanks for the heads up on EB, want to stay spoiler free allthe way to the premiere if possible.

@Thorsten....

I'm 21 ;)

thorsten said...

cool, Martyn. Heard you met a mutual friend today ;))

RobPerrin said...

Also brought in my DD for custom framing today. Hope it ends up looking at least half as good as Ben's.

Limbofunk said...

@Ray Thanks for the heads up on Olly's shipment...I can't wait!(Obviously I can, but you know what I mean)

ObFuSc8 said...

Ugh -- spoliers -- thanks for the heads up!

I have tried everything I know how to remain spoiler free...since S1! (I learned my lesson with The XFiles.)

I try to avoid casting stuff to, but I considered that SPiN video just a tiny, minor spoiler. At that point I was to entrenched in DCaaPB to look away!

Amy Lynn said...

I didn't have too much of a choice with the SPiN video... I was just trying to get the darn URL.

thorsten said...

Ray, thanks for the shipping news…

ObFuSc8 said...

And we still totally thank you for that Amy Lynn! And for being the ONLY one who thought enough to tape it.

Amy Lynn said...

I'm still bitter it never got uploaded to the hub. I'd have loved to have actually had audio.

thorsten said...

Yes, no Linder gallery without Amy!

Capcom said...

Yes me too Amy, I wonder why it never got there? That's not like TPTB in the past during Lost ARGs, they were always very good about that. At least we had yours.

LOL Thorsten and Patmc.....I'm overdue for my New You visit. :-o

Just Thinking said...

Other things to avoid if you don't want casting news- Darlton's tweets, cast member interviews, the Wash Post Doc Jenson interview, ComicCon 09, etc.

Fortunately, casting on Lost doesn't mean anything for sure-you could be someone else entirely!

thorsten said...

Right, Capcom… Pat is on my trail now, he knows that I am 5 days older than Jacob…

Patmc said...

@Thorsten - you had better have your Ankh with you... I'm just sayin...

Amy Lynn said...

@MurghBatwar, still no email.

MurghBatwar said...

@AmyLynn

sorry - e-mail playing up, will keep trying later

thorsten said...

Pat, did you know that there was Logan's Search, in which Logan has to retopple the system in a slightly different alternate reality?

Patmc said...

@Thorsten - I didn't know that, actually. I just hit the wikipedia, and it looks like there was also another book called Logan's World... and an ebook novelette called Logan's Return. Now I'm going to have to buy them! LOL

All work and no play, makes Zort a dull boy... ;-)

Welcome back! I just wish you had decided to vacation on the West coast, instead of the East coast. It seems we're not going to have a winter here this year... (sigh) Another sunny, 68 degree day in San Diego...

Comic Con is coming up... I'm just sayin...

Just in from a very hectic day during which, on my travels, I had the pleasure of meeting up briefly with Martyn! All I can say is you guys going to Hawaii will be in great company. Brilliant to see you Martyn.

ZORT! Welcome home. See you in a few days once the emails are dealt with ;-)

I missed out on the flipper chat... probably a good thing.

Here's a funny S6 teaser (no spoilers at all) from Darlton from Sky1. Carlton just tweeted it!

Welcome home zort.

Zort70 said...

Thanks Thorsten.

By the way for UK people Sky 1 have confirmed that Lost will be on Fridays at 9pm in the UK.

Amy Lynn said...

Hey, Zort, how are we going to work the whole US getting the episode 3 days before y'all, in regard to discussion here? I already read TWoP, and probably won't go over to TLC or any of the other sites.

Joey said...

Zort- Welcome back! I hope you had a great trip!

islandwales said...

@zort

NICE - why doesnt it just say friday the 5th feb rather than "coming february" - it better not be any later!

MiddayShadows said...

Tyler Stout has put the message out that anyone wanting info regarding the sale of his 'LOST,'should be signed up for his mailing list. You can do that under 'contact' on his home page (currently typo'd as "Caantact").

Might have been posted here already, somewhere, but he is apparently sending out an important email Friday, so it deserves another mention.

Welcome back to Zort!

adam_keller said...

Cuse said, "Working on my commencement address as Co-President of Lost University. I wonder if we can lure Urban Meyer to coach the Polar Bears."

I just love the shout out to the University of Florida! GO GATORS! The city of Gainesville made it into an episode of LOST (as did Tallahassee, but I try not to remember that)!!

futureself said...

Welcome home Zort!

It's so cool ChrisL and Martyn met up! You can totally be each others constants now :)

Martyn - broadband still not installed but I'm assured that there are some very clever men working a slow as possible in BT hatches all over the world to push the 'on' button and this will happen before the end of today. First thing I'm going to do when this happens is watch your animation!

Patmc said...

Well... it's official: Jay Leno is taking over the Tonight Show again, and Conan O'Brien is out!

Not a huge Conan fan... but both NBC and Jay Leno should be ashamed of themselves for stabbing Conan in the back!

Amy Lynn said...

Pat, it's possible that Conan got a better deal. He announced that 1/22 was going to be his last show a few hours before TMZ broke the news that Leno was getting the slot back.

Anonymous said...

So What night of the week are the US getting season 6?

If the UK are not getting it until Friday and the US is Wed or before, I'll have to download or explode!

thorsten said...

So maybe Conan is on Fox now…

Amy Lynn said...

ioioos, we'll get LOST at 9pm (I think that's the right time, except for the premiere) EST Tuesdays

Zort70 said...

The winners of the fifth prize has just been announced.

Patmc said...

@AmyLynn - I hope for Conan's sake, he does get a deal with Fox. NBC is saying that they still have his contract and may "ice" him for up to 3 years. Wow! And NBC thought they stirred up a hornets nest before! I don't think NBC Universal wants or needs THAT kind of negative backlash.

@Ioioos - Tuesday's for us... which works out well for me. There's not much on Tuesdays that I watch anyway.

Only 7 hours to Lost University's second semester! Woo hoo! I'll be waiting for it with my camcorder running! :-)

Zort70 said...

Amy I usually go into a self imposed exile when the episode airs in the US until it has aired over here.

All the discussions will normally be iver at The Lost Community blog.

thorsten said...

Congrats Tremendous Pie and Herm212!

Amy Lynn said...

Zort, can we stay here instead of going to TLC?

Zort70 said...

TLC is the parent of this site, we usually switch between the two, so that TLC has the LOST series info and LostARGS has marketing / ARG info.

Kind of odd maybe, but just what has happened in the past.

The two sites are companions, with the same values and a lot of the same contributors.

Patmc said...

I agree with Amy Lynn. Is there any chance you could just open up a new thread after new episodes air in the US... and then just stay away from the thread until you've seen it? I really want a place where I can discuss and analyze the new episodes, with all the friends I've made here...

Pretty, pretty, please? :-)

ChrisL said...

Congrats to Tremendous Pie and Herm212. Very cool prizes.

ChrisL said...

And you thought you'd be able to take a hiatus Zort....

Zort70 said...

Yes, any LU info would be appreciated.

ChrisL said...

Sayid'sgirl, if you're around could you email me please, chris dot leaning at gmail dot com. Thanks.

maven said...

We've always had episode discussions at TLC (The Lost Community). LostArgs is an off-shoot from there after The Lost Experience. A lot of the people who participate there in the past will be there at the start of S6 (in fact there is a discussion going on over there now on the latest post). Please, all are welcome over there.

This whole NBC/Leno/Conan thing has been a disaster. Personally, I like Leno better than Conan, but I agree that Conan was treated the worst!

maven said...

And, BTW and FYI, my late father was the original writer on the Tonight show with Steve Allen...so I do have a somewhat connection to the show!

Amy Lynn said...

maven, that's awesome! Steve Allen was great. My only TV claim to fame is that my father-in-law wrote for (and named) The Flintstones. He also wrote the Reisner (sp?) Report, and the Miss America pageant.

Rorschach said...

Congratulations to the winners, I wanted that mug....

The 2 names I considered for #4 were Jin and Ben. Assuming that the question was from Rousseau's perspective. She met Jin first, but slightly off the Island (in the raft) and the next main character she met was when Ben stole Alex from her.

Smokey was an interesting choice (basically the same argument for Ben as Smokey), but I don't think it has been seen enough to qualify it as a "main character".

Ellen B said...

Welcome back, Zort! I know I'm not the only one who missed you! Hope you had fun!

Zort70 said...

I've just put an announcement about the Tyler Stout info on the front page, thanks to all that reminded me of the info here or via email.

MurghBatwar said...

@AmyLynn
Finally solved my email probs so you should have a message.

Not sure what i'll do when Lost starts as i wont be able to go on a variety of sites and media from the Tuesday a Lost is shown to the Friday when we get it here in the UK! Going to be tricky to not find anything out and want to watch it in HD on my big telly with the missus rather than download it and watch it on my pc.

Sam G said...

I found a bunch of LOST University on youtube.

MJCarp said...

I've posted a message re: LU at the LU thread.

Congratulations, Tremendous Pie and Herm212 for winning Competition 5!

Thorsten, thank you so very much for manning the helm of The Lostargs while Captain Zort70 was off duty. Not a man overboard! *whistles* Let's break out the grog.

thorsten said...

But Ellen B, din't we all miss Zort?

Ellen B said...

Thorsten, that's actually what my first post said, but then I thought I was being presumptuous. But Zort, WE ALL MISSED YOU!!!

thorsten said...

Grog for all, awesome idea Lotto!

ChrisL said...

Yes Thorsten. Top job while the Boss was away. And Maven too. Thanks both of you for keeping us safe.

thorsten said...

haha, so how is your thesis coming along, Ellen?

thorsten said...

You know, Chris, it was an honor to serve with you all!

Ellen B said...

Thorsten, I haven't decided on a topic yet. I start school in March. ;)

Amy Lynn said...

@EllenB, how about "Benjamin Linus: Island Hero or Island Zero"?

thorsten said...

Cool, have fun with that and keep us posted, Ellen!

ObFuSc8 said...

Yes, thanks Thorsten and Maven for acting as our Number 1 (Numbers 1?) while Zort was away on leave.

I really only posted at the ABC forum until now...a few very long running threads there. Once S6 starts my time will be limited, but without these artist drops I think I'd be able to drop in at TLC. I really want to continue the dialogue with this amazing group during our final season.

Ellen B said...

You know, it may well be that I choose something LOST-related. Popular culture is a real academic discipline. :) Amy, your topic is very cool. Hey, maybe we should have a contest to pick my dissertation topic?!

Zort70 said...

Yes I have to say a big public thanks to Thorsten and Maven for taking care of things.

@adam_keller: When did Gainesville come up? I must have forgotten about that. My parents went to Uni of FL/worked there for a while, and some chance they might be moving back soon lol.

Very excited for Semester two of LU, but kind of hoping classes don't open until a reasonable time tomorrow! Otherwise I'll be trying to stay up late to do it and that hasn't been going well lately.

mungonna said...

Discuss I will..perhaps a poll is in order...Smokie..Major Character of LOST or Not?
I contend Smokie Is a Character of Lost and a Major one at that. Therefore, Rousseau met Smokie first,,before Jin or Sayid or Ben,,before any so called divergent time lines.

Smokie moves,,acts,, has dialogue..as itself and as impersonating shape shifter...and even most important,,has an ARC,,therefore is a character. As far as Major..well shoot..we were introduced to Smokie in episode one and its been with us ever since. Major?? HAA!! Its obvious to me,,that LOST can not end with out resolution of the Smoke Monster..Thats Major!..I mean.. other characters, even beloved MAJOR ones die, get dead, get the one way ticket off the Island..but Smokie..the Explanation Of LOST, The BIG PICTURE that answers all mystery,,is directly tied to,,what Smokie IS. Thats MAJOR.

Just because Smokie isn't bi pedal, and speaks the Kings English,,when it isn't impersonating somebody or something, doesn't take away from being a character. Locke saw beauty in Smokietta,,Eko was picked up and body slammed WFW style..on and on..all the way to Alex.. I mean..look at the cast of characters in Shakespearres Hamlet..is not the Ghost of the Dead King listed as a character? Smokie definitely has more " substance' than a mere ghost!

So whats my real point here? Perspective!..out side of the box perspective on what is a " character"..and a major one at that. Back in season 2 and 3 I said Time was a Character..well look what happened in season 5..the donkey wheel became the symbol, the metaphor for Time. If there is objection to the stretch applied to perpsective of LOST,,alls I have to do is quote the all time easter egg of season 3.." Only fools are enslaved by Time and Space." I didn't say it.. they did. The liberation of perspective is being suggested. My Point is..Try it,, you mite find some fun in it.

@Ellen B: my folks, who are both former college professors in psych and I, have already come up with an outline for a LOST-based psychology course. ;) There WILL be dissertations and courses on it, I guarantee!

And yes many thanks to Thorsten and maven.

MiddayShadows said...

Yes, well done Thorsten, and Maven too, manning the helm while Zort was working on his island tan!

thorsten said...

No problem, I left the keys in the door Zort!

Amy Lynn said...

I think Smokey IS a character in the same way the island is a character. Which, really, it is.

Unknown said...

Hey uh, Lostpedia claims the promo aired during the 2005/39 Super Bowl. Are they incorrect?

Attorney Greg said...

@ Mel - in Rousseau's timeline she met Jin first. Period. She wasn't time traveling, Jin was. So whether Smokey is main (or even a character as opposed to a thing) is irrelevant to the question.

The fact that Sayid was accepted is just a gift to those with the wrong answer. In Jin and Sayid's timeline Sayid met Rousseau before Jin. But in Rousseau's timeline she met Jin first.

Didn't effect me as I think I missed the last question anyway (think I put the song instead of the band - whoops)

Unknown said...

@anne - I think they are incorrect. I nearly put that down as my answer but I double checked on Youtube and Wikipedia and its Superbowl 2006.

futureself said...

Good job Thorsten and Maven...thanks for all the hard work during an exceptionally busy time.

And I agree that Smokey should be counted as a main character.

Sam G said...

@Amy Lyn

Well, if the Smoke Monster & the Island are characters, the Island is the first character everyone meets.

Ellen B said...

Interesting discussion. Unfortunately, I have to go, we're going out to dinner. But now that I'm caught up with comments, it won't be quite so hard to keep caught up! Cheers to all, especially Zort. :)

Attorney Greg said...

@ Anne - yes, yes, they are.

Someone probably got confused b/c for instance The Superbowl for this year (2009 season) is played in 2010.

Just got back from an up slap meal with my family celebrating my youngest sisters parent evening that was cancelled because of the snow! Makes no sense to me but free food!

Been a great day for me, both bosses away at work so a very relaxed atmosphere at work and meeting ChrisL, who is an amazing guy. Was just nice talking about the posters with someone who was as passionate about them as I was for a change.

Then obviously the meal was nice too!

I never watch LOST on Sky, always download. Now ChrisL told me about streaming to my PS3, that's what i'll be doing from now on so I can watch it in HD.

@Maven...

I think for a lot of people, like myself, we feel like a close knit group, so moving over to another close knit group and trying to continue it would be a little strange. I know who to respect on here and recognise the names, so going over there, it'd be being careful what we say so we don't get in trouble with the people who we should respect.

I'm not sure I make sense there to be honest. Either way, i'll be watching it on Wednesday while you americans are all sleeping and coming over, be it here or TLC, to read other people's comments.

@futureself...

No worries about the internet, my animation isn't exactly groundbreaking, just very very studenty, Although I do appreciate the comments from Lisa and Just Thinking. Had a nice little conversation with Kharma Initiative about it last night, saying why certain areas were poor and my aim to redo it all one day when I have the time.

@ChrisL...

If you want to send me that e-mail you mentioned, I'm all for helping out!

@Maven, comixguru or MEL...

Any idea as to the surprise that Bruce mentioned in his tweet this morning for the Aha Aina Dinner?

Right, all caught up now I think. Off to flap like a chicken on wii fit for a bit!

Martyn said...

No it wasn't.

Thanks Maven and Thorsten for laying down the law in Zorts absence. No substitute teacher nonsense!

Welcome back Zort, I bet you were wishing your flight was cancelled for another week once you saw(felt?) the weather?

Rorschach said...

@ Mel

When did Rousseau meet Smokey prior to meeting Jin on the Island? Jin was with her during the science team's first encounter with Smokey. This of course assumes that Jin always went back in time (whatever happened, happened). Are you taking the stance that there was a run through of the science team's crash on the Island that happened without meeting Jin?

I can see your point about Smokey being a main character; though I would classify it as more of a guest star than a main character. Important (main plot point), just not seen enough to be a main character. That is just semantics though. I just don't see when Rousseau met Smokey before Jin.
